“I can’t do it, I’m scared!” my three-year-old mumbled through tears as he stood on the edge of the pool, staring at his dad who was waiting to catch him. “You’ve got this, buddy. Jump in—I’ll be here to catch you,” my husband encouraged. My son took one deep breath and committed to the leap. Moments later, he surfaced soaking wet and wrapped safely in his dad’s arms. His face lit up with confidence and joy as he immediately shouted, “Again!”
My son overcame his fear of jumping into the water because he knew the character of his father. He knew his dad was trustworthy, strong, and capable. He knew this because he spent time with him, watched him, and believed what his dad said.
It may seem like a simple illustration, but can we say the same about our relationship with our Heavenly Father? Do we know the character of the One who knitted us together in our mother’s womb? Do we truly seek Him, study His Word, and trust Him for who He says He is?
In the season of the little years, it can feel easy—even justified—to drift away from intentional time with the Lord. But we must never allow that to happen. Especially in these years! We need His mercy more than ever as we are entrusted with the care and discipleship of eternal souls living under our own roofs.
If you feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to begin, start with prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the root of your sin—whether it is pride, self-reliance, passivity, or something else. Confess your sin, ask for forgiveness, and pray for a renewed hunger for the living Word of God. Ask Him to help you know your Savior more deeply and follow Him more faithfully.
Psalm 9:10 says, “And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.” The Lord knows His children, and His children must seek Him daily. Much like my son was able to jump because he knew his father would catch him, we can obey God with confidence when we know His character. He is faithful, powerful, and incapable of failing His children.

About the author Jaci Newell- I live in the Dallas suburbs with my husband, Jordan, our three children, and Weller, our loyal hunting dog. As a stay-at-home mom, I spend my days nurturing our home—shepherding little hearts, baking sourdough, preparing meals to gather friends and family around our table, and creating a space that feels warm and welcoming. In the quieter moments, I love brewing a fresh espresso and diving into thoughtful theological conversations.
